All my sons – Pre reading activities

Task 1

#10 influential things in Arthur Miller’s life
  • Being a Polish inmigrant
  • Being a jewish descendent
  • Her mother used to read lots of novels
  • Economic difficulties to overcome during the Great Depression
  • Attending University of Michigan
  • Kenneth Rowe’s courses
  •  Marrying Marylin Monroe
  • Actions of the HUAC
  • His son Daniel, and his syndrome
  • People’s support all along his career

Task 2

  1. I would define a responsible person as someone who does the things he is suppossed to and thinks of a bigger sake as regards his actions.
  2. In some aspects I am a responsible person, however in others I am not. For instance, I am responsible when talking about school, but I am not so responsible as regards the environment or the fact that I lose things all the time. My mother is responsible because she always remembers and does the things she and others depend on her to do, and for example, now during corona virus she doesn’t allow me to go outside although there is no school and we are not strictly forced to stay home all day. The second example is a proof of being responsible as she is also taking care of other people by not allowing me to go outside.
  3. I think that the best way to learn how to be responsibles is to make mistakes and learn from them, mainly commiting to change your habits and start working on it. The teachers are people who have a big impact in your life and people that you can take as an example, and be able to listen to their advices.
  4. Being responsible is a characteristic that seems really important to me, because it means that you can commit to something and that you won’t let someone down. Besides that, I thinks that it is a value that can be improved, so getting better at it shows someone’s desire to be a better person.
  5. The statement makes reference to the fact that we have to think about our action’s impact and if we would like someone doing the same thing  to us if we were  in that situation too. It is mainly related to empathy and putting in the other person’s shoes. A situation in which I used to think of this concept was when someone I knew was being left out from a plan that was being arranged with other friends. In those situations I used to think that if it were me I would not like being left out, so I acted to change the situation and try to include that friend.

Nervous System

2 components -> Central + Peripheral

Central-> The Brain and  spinal cord

Peripheral-> Sensory neurons, ganglia and nerves that connect to one another + the central nervous system.

Sensory: Sensory neurons carry signals from the outer parts of your body (periphery) into the central nervous system. An example is Smell: Olfactory sensory neurons are excited by chemical molecules.

Relay: (Only found in the brain, visual system and spinal cord) They allow sensory and motor neurons to communicate, receiving a signal from one neuron to then transfer to another interneuron, resulting in the signal being passed to a motor neuron, which drives the reaction to the stimulus.

Motor: Part of the central nervous system (CNS) and connect to muscles, glands and organs throughout the body. transmit impulses from the spinal cord to skeletal and smooth muscles, and so directly control all of our muscle movements.

Diary Entry

Write a diary entry from Ali’s point of view as regards the actions of his father.

Dear diary,

I am afraid I can’t endure the discrimination coming from my dad any more. I think my dad has already understandood how I feel at the moment, given to the sullen expression I have had for the last seven days.

The best way to describe how I am right now is disappointed and trapped. My father doesn’t understand how serious I am about this subject, and how serious I take it. It seems that he doesn’t care and I can tell that because of the insolent tone he has acquired. I understand his distress about me playing truant in a recent past, but that doesn’t make his look of contempt any nicer to me.

I was just seeking for respect towards my religion, but seeing him drunk at dinner did not leave me any other choice than venturing in his own actions and punish him about them. All he could manage to say to defend himself were stuttered sentences. How was it even possible that a man could change his way of seeing the world in such a quick and normal way? From Muslim to a follower of the Western culture is a radical change, one that doesn’t seem as a possible thing to me.

It is not that I do not love my family and friends, it is just that the Quran and Allah inspire me in a way no one has ever done before, and that inspiration makes me give them all the priority in my life. If family is the opportunity cost, then let it be if they can not keep up with my new life style.

I have the feeling that something is going to happen today, but I can’t figure out whether it is going to be good or bad. I will keep in touch in case anything occurs.

I’ll write you soon,

Essay on Bullying

Bullying causes depression. Do you agree?

Nowadays, bullying is becoming a major problem worldwide, affecting a larger range of teenagers every day. Its effects are turning into a main subject of discussion, and among them there is depression, which in what I am concerned, it definitely is a primary consequence of bullying.

To begin with, it has been proved that bullying has an enormous impact in an individual’s self esteem. Bullying victims suffer from huge teasing mainly due to their physical conditions, which results in victims questioning their own bodies and comparing with others. Moreover, they start asking themselves why is it that they are not accepted or fit in, this forcing them to blame themselves and hating their whole self. This creates a constant auto-bullying within the victims, who torture themselves for what they are, as well as a big insecurity issue.

Furthermore, trust issues are also a huge impact of bullying indeed. Not only because of what the problem they are, but also due to the chain reaction they provoque in the victim’s lives. Trust issues are not just a lack of confidence in the victim’s own abilities and their self esteem, they also, and more importantly, imply a lack of trust with other people, which affects their social life, and how they manage to relate with others. Depression is deeply connected with this issue due to the chainreaction mentioned before. These trust issues that are created by the bullie, cause a deterioration of the victim’s social manners, which forced them to push away anyone who tries to approach them. This isolation is what makes depression more and more severe with the pass of time, caused by a solitary view of the world of the victim, who given to the trust issues ends up being alone and depressed.

Despite the fact that I do not share this view, it is said that although depression is somehow related to bullying, that there are no actual scientific studies as regards this problem. It is true that many people who suffer from this intimidation called bullying can get over it and put a barrier as to not be affected by the insults, but I believe that this is definitely not a the majority of the cases. It is also argued that teenagers can not suffer from depression, due to their young age, but in my opinion, there is no age for this type of problems, and mainly this one, who mostly strikes teens, who are the most vulnerable sector of society as regards to this subject.

To sum up, I believe that there are many factors and effects that bullying leaves, that take to depression in it’s victims. Trust issues and low self esteem are some of the consequences that indirectly lead to a harsh depression within victims. So, all in all, I believe that depression can absolutely be caused by bullying.

Description of a place

I worked with Lucia Do Carmo.

Far away from the crowded city center, rises a a rusty wooden construction, which does not lack modernism at all. The flawless turquoise from the sea highlights the coffee-like walls that built the extraordinary structure of the appealing house. A peaceful atmosphere is created given to the crystal clear water that surrounds the house. Burgeoning palms provide a malodorous scent to the fresh scene. Moreover, a harmonious state of mind is achieved thanks to the rhythmical clash between the sharpened waves of the sea and the fine golden sand. A light breeze acts as an orchestral conductor for the undetectable flow of the glittering sand, which makes everyone standing barefooted slightly wet when stepping on her. The unbelievable sweltering heat continued to occupy the slightest corner of the area, it even became a blurred line the one between the inside and outside of the house. A salty smell engulfed noses that dared to go nearby and caused weak eyes to be filled with tears. Not only did the sun cover almost every step given, but also did it turned shadows into a construction of coloured fragments of light, as if they were a puzzle under construction.
